Abstract

Wastewater from small-scale tofu and tempeh food processing facilities contains high levels of organic matter that has the potential to pollute the environment; therefore, it must be treated through a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). This study aims to evaluate the performance of WWTPs at small-scale tofu and tempeh food processing facilities in Palembang based on Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels and pH values at the inlet and outlet. The study employed a descriptive observational design involving 30 WWTPs selected through purposive sampling. Wastewater samples were collected at the inlet and outlet using the grab sampling method. BOD testing was conducted at the Palembang City Environmental Agency Laboratory using the SNI 6989.72:2009 method, while pH was measured directly in the field. The data were analyzed descriptively and compared with quality standards based on Minister of Environment Regulation No. 5 of 2014. The results showed that the average BOD decreased from 8,555.37 mg/L at the inlet to 1,893.20 mg/L at the outlet. The average pH changed from 5.46 at the inlet to 4.17 at the outlet. None of the outlet samples met the quality standards of BOD ≤150 mg/L and pH 6–9. It was concluded that the wastewater treatment plant is capable of reducing BOD levels, but its performance is not yet optimal in producing wastewater that meets quality standards based on the BOD and pH parameters.
