Abstract

Film adaptation is a promising business strategy in the modern film industry, leveraging established audience bases and brand recognition. However, research on its business potential remains centered on Hollywood and European contexts, leaving the adaptation-driven Indonesian market largely underexplored. This qualitative literature-based study fills this gap by analyzing 21 national and international journals alongside data from 5 industry websites. Findings show that the Indonesian film industry is dominated by novel and comic adaptations, such as Laskar Pelangi, Dilan 1990, Gundala, and Sri Asih. Conversely, video game adaptations remain sparse due to the local game industry's limited capacity to maintain collaborative models and intellectual property (IP) fidelity, factors driving global success. Although adapted films offer lower investment risks and stronger market appeal, higher profitability over original sequels or franchises is not guaranteed. Success hinges heavily on adaptation execution quality, fan expectation management, and technological readiness, particularly for formats like motion comics. This study maps media adaptation potential in Indonesia while identifying structural barriers that restrict the realization of national game-based IP.
