Abstract

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is an important competency that needs to be developed in elementary school students to support their ability to recognize and manage emotions, collaborate, communicate positively, demonstrate empathy, and make responsible decisions. The low level of students’ social-emotional skills in Grade V at SDN 2 Ngantru was indicated by less optimal group collaboration, emotional regulation, and confidence in expressing opinions during the learning process. This study aimed to determine the effect of the Game Based Learning (GBL) model assisted by the Spinning Wheel media on the Social Emotional Learning skills of Grade V students at SDN 2 Ngantru, Trenggalek. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a nonequivalent control group design. The subjects consisted of 54 students divided into an experimental class and a control class, with 27 students in each class. Data were collected using an SEL questionnaire that met the validity and reliability criteria, with a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.931. Data analysis included normality testing, homogeneity testing, an independent sample t-test, and an N-Gain effectiveness test. The results showed that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous. The hypothesis test obtained a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating a significant difference between the experimental and control classes. The experimental class obtained a higher posttest mean score of 89.78 compared to 71.56 in the control class. The N-Gain result for the experimental class reached 71.31%, categorized as high, while the control class obtained 5.51%, categorized as low. Therefore, the Game Based Learning model assisted by Spinning Wheel media had a significant and effective effect on improving the Social Emotional Learning skills of Grade V students at SDN 2 Ngantru.
