Abstract

Learning media play an important role in helping students understand the concepts of Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) through concrete learning experiences. However, the learning process on sound-related topics in elementary schools is still predominantly conducted through lecture methods, causing students to experience difficulties in understanding the abstract concept of sound propagation. This study aimed to determine the effect and effectiveness of using recycled-material tin-can telephone learning media on the cognitive learning outcomes of fifth-grade elementary school students in IPAS, particularly on the topic of sound. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 20 students, comprising 10 students in the experimental class and 10 students in the control class. Data were collected using tests administered as pretests and posttests. Data analysis was conducted using normality and homogeneity tests, an Independent Samples t-test, and an N-Gain test. The results showed that the use of tin-can telephone media had a statistically significant effect on students' cognitive learning outcomes, with a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05). The mean posttest score of the experimental class was 93.5, which was higher than that of the control class at 80.5. The N-Gain analysis showed that the experimental class achieved an N-Gain score of 79.3690%, categorized as effective, while the control class achieved an N-Gain score of 35.5595%, categorized as ineffective. Therefore, the use of recycled-material tin-can telephone learning media had a significant and effective effect on improving the cognitive learning outcomes of fifth-grade elementary school students in IPAS on the topic of sound.
