Abstract

Rural communities often face economic limitations due to restricted employment opportunities and the underutilization of local resources. Sawit Village, Karangasem, Tanon, Sragen, has considerable potential in soybean processing because soybeans are relatively accessible and tempeh is widely consumed by the community. This community service program focused on strengthening household economic resilience through participatory assistance in soybean tempeh production for women in RT 06 Sawit Village. The program aimed to improve technical skills in hygienic tempeh production, increase entrepreneurial awareness, and encourage product packaging and marketing practices that support small-scale business development. The method used was participatory community assistance involving initial observation, joint planning, technical training, field mentoring, business management education, and evaluation. Community members were involved in every stage of the activity, from identifying problems to implementing production and packaging practices. The results showed that participants were able to select quality soybeans, apply appropriate fermentation procedures, maintain sanitation during production, and produce tempeh with a compact texture, white color, and characteristic aroma. In addition, participants gained new knowledge about simple packaging and product labeling as preparation for local marketing. The program also encouraged greater confidence among women to develop home-based economic activities and utilize local agricultural potential more productively. Participatory assistance in soybean tempeh production can therefore serve not only as a food-processing activity but also as a community empowerment strategy that contributes to skills improvement, entrepreneurial awareness, and local economic resilience.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to strengthen the marketing capacity of a micro-enterprise producing swamp spinach (bayam sawah) chips, a traditional snack whose promotion had relied on instant messaging applications and occasional offline exhibitions. The program employed a Contextual Action Research approach, beginning with a reconnaissance phase of field observation and in-depth interviews, followed by a planning and action-with-reflection cycle. Four interventions were implemented: improvement of product visuals through a smartphone-based photography session, development of an official business website functioning as a product information hub and online ordering facility, optimisation of the business Instagram account together with a targeted Instagram Ads campaign, and knowledge transfer so that the artisans could manage the digital assets independently. Within the scope and duration of the program, evaluation relied on qualitative and process indicators rather than quantitative impact measurement. The results show an observable shift in the artisans' marketing practices and digital capacity, from a reliance on instant messaging and offline exhibitions toward a more structured digital marketing presence, and the emergence of a cross-generational division of digital roles within the group. Changes in sales volume, turnover, and audience engagement were not measured and therefore cannot be claimed. The program provides an initial foundation for improving the economic position of local artisans and for preserving local culinary heritage in the digital era, and offers an assistance model that has the potential to be adapted for other traditional food MSMEs.
