Abstract

The expanding availability and effortless accessibility of packaged snack foods have progressively reshaped adolescents' dietary consumption patterns. This phenomenon has raised public health concerns, as excessive intake of such products may elevate the consumption of sugar, sodium, and fat, thereby increasing the likelihood of adverse health outcomes. The present study explored the association between adolescents' nutritional label literacy, their practice of consulting nutrition information labels, and the level of packaged snack food consumption. An analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach was employed, involving 228 eleventh-grade students from SMA Negeri 9 Surabaya selected through proportional random sampling. Data were gathered using standardized questionnaires to assess nutrition label knowledge and label-reading practices, while the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) was administered to estimate packaged snack food consumption. Statistical analysis was performed using the Chi-square test at a 95% confidence level. The findings revealed that nutrition label knowledge demonstrated a statistically significant association with sodium and fat consumption, whereas no significant relationship was identified with sugar intake. Conversely, the practice of reading nutrition information labels exhibited no statistically meaningful association with the consumption of sugar, sodium, or fat. These findings suggest that a deeper understanding of nutritional information exerts a more substantial influence on adolescents' dietary choices than the mere routine of reading nutrition labels. Accordingly, strengthening nutrition literacy among adolescents should be regarded as a strategic priority for fostering healthier food consumption behaviors.
