Abstract

Eating behaviours, physical activity, and nutrient adequacy interact in a multifaceted manner to shape the nutritional status of university students. Nevertheless, the combined influence of meal-time regularity and macronutrient intake remains insufficiently explored. This study sought to examine the associations of meal-time regularity, physical activity, and macronutrient intake with the nutritional status of students at the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Airlangga. A total of 98 students aged 18–25 years were recruited through proportionate quota sampling in this quantitative cross-sectional investigation. Nutritional status was determined using anthropometric measurements, physical activity was evaluated with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and dietary intake was assessed using three non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls. Macronutrient intake was quantified with NutriSurvey software, whereas meal-time regularity was evaluated using the Mealtime Regularity Scoring method. Fisher’s Exact test demonstrated significant associations between nutritional status and the regularity of breakfast, lunch, and dinner consumption. Significant relationships were likewise identified for protein and fat intake, whereas physical activity exhibited no statistically significant association. Energy and carbohydrate intake could not be subjected to statistical analysis because all participants within the deficient intake category belonged to a single classification. These findings underscore that maintaining consistent meal timing, together with adequate macronutrient consumption, constitutes an essential determinant in preserving the nutritional status of university students.
