Abstract

This study aims to analyze strategies of linguistic politeness based on Brown and Levinson’s 1987 theory in directive illocutionary acts used by the main character in the drama Go Ahead 《以家人之名》 (Yǐ Jiārén Zhī Míng). This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data sources consisting of the main character’s utterances containing directive illocutionary acts. Data were collected through observation and note-taking, then analyzed using the pragmatic correspondence method. The results show that directive illocutionary acts are realized in eight forms: offers, requests, suggestions, advice, invitations, prohibitions, instructions, and commands. Analysis based on Brown and Levinson’s theory identified four politeness strategies: positive politeness, negative politeness, off-record, and bald on-record. The positive politeness strategy was the most dominant, as it was used to build rapport, show concern, and preserve the addressee’s positive face. The negative politeness strategy is realized through mitigation, interrogative forms, and the provision of reasons, while “off record” is used to convey meaning implicitly. The “bald on record” strategy, meanwhile, emerges in situations that demand immediate action or when the speaker holds higher authority. The research findings support Brown and Levinson’s theory that the choice of politeness strategies is influenced by face-threatening acts, social distance, power, and the ranking of imposition, so that the strategies used always adapt to the context of communication and interpersonal relationships.
