Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of direct imperative sentences as a representation of power in The Shadow’s Edge based on Zhang Hengjun’s concept of imperative sentences and Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis. The data consist of utterances expressing commands, prohibitions, instructions, or demands in the characters’ dialogue. The data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and selected based on their relevance to power relations. The analysis was conducted through Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework, encompassing text, discursive practice, and social practice. The findings reveal that direct imperative sentences function as linguistic means of controlling the interlocutor’s actions, attention, behavior, access to information, and mobility. Based on Zhang Hengjun’s concept, these utterances serve an interpersonal function because they directly influence the interlocutor’s actions. From Fairclough’s perspective, the use of imperatives represents power in discourse through commands, prohibitions, directive reinforcement, and Jackie Chen’s position as the primary issuer of instructions and coordinator of the group. At the level of social practice, these utterances reflect authority, control, discipline, coordination, domination, and asymmetrical power relations. Therefore, direct imperative sentences function as discursive strategies through which Jackie’s dominant position is constructed and maintained in interpersonal interactions.
