Abstract

This study aims to describe the functions of wakamono kotoba used in comments during Japanese TikTok live streams. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach based on Jakobson’s (1960) theory of language functions. The data source consists of comments posted during TikTok live streams by native Japanese speakers, while the research data comprise ten utterances containing wakamono kotoba. Data were collected using the observation method through non-participant observation and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed through several stages, including identification, classification based on the context of use, analysis of language functions, and interpretation within the context of digital communication. The findings reveal five language functions: emotive, phatic, conative, referential, and poetic. The emotive function is found in 「ヤバめ」 and 「えぐい」, which are used to express evaluation and admiration. The phatic function appears in 「こんちゃ!」 and 「おひさー」, which serve to initiate and maintain communication. The conative function is identified in 「スクショしてもいーい?」 and 「それググってみて!」, which are used to elicit responses and direct the interlocutor’s actions. The referential function is evident in 「ラグい」 and 「ゴッチャ」, which convey information about particular situations or conditions. Meanwhile, the poetic function is found in 「ワロタ」 and 「草」, reflecting creativity and humorous effects in digital communication. Thus, wakamono kotoba functions not only as informal language but also as a communication strategy for expressing emotions, fostering familiarity, directing responses, and conveying information in TikTok interactions.
