Abstract

Fruit flies (Bactrocera spp.) are among the important insect pests affecting chili pepper production, causing fruit damage and yield losses. This study evaluated the effectiveness of different combinations of trap colors and attractant types for increasing fruit fly captures in chili pepper cultivation. A factorial Randomized Block Design (RBD) was employed with two experimental factors: trap color (transparent, yellow, and green) and attractant type (Petrogenol, Ferokop, and Ceramone). Analysis of variance revealed a significant interaction between trap color and attractant type on the number of captured fruit flies, whereas the main effects of each factor were not statistically significant. The combination of transparent traps and Ceramone attractant resulted in the highest capture abundance, averaging 23 individuals per day. Male fruit flies consistently outnumbered females across all treatments; however, neither trap color nor attractant type significantly affected the sex ratio of the captured insects. Species identification showed that Bactrocera dorsalis was the dominant species, with 351 individuals recorded, followed by Bactrocera carambolae (26 individuals) and Bactrocera umbrosa (14 individuals). These findings indicate that the interaction between visual cues and chemical attractants influences trap performance and highlights the importance of integrating both stimuli in fruit fly monitoring and management strategies for sustainable chili pepper production.
