Abstract

Learning sensors, transducers, embedded systems, and the Internet of Things (IoT) requires laboratory media that allows students to observe relationships among input signals, microcontroller processing, output responses, and network communication in one system. This study develops EMBEDSENSE, an integrated microcontroller trainer for the Sensor and Transducer course, and verifies its initial functional performance. The study uses Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE model and reports the Analysis, Design, and Development stages. EMBEDSENSE integrates Arduino Uno, Arduino Nano, NodeMCU ESP8266, DHT11, LDR, HC-SR04, LCD 16×2 I2C, relay, LEDs, buzzer, input-output terminals, and a power supply. Hardware assembly reached 100%, while the draft module and jobsheets reached approximately 85% and contained six progressive experiments. Internal testing showed that the sensor, display, and actuator groups operated according to their basic functions. The ESP8266 also established network communication, although connection stability required software and transmission-interval optimization. The prototype is ready for expert validation and limited user testing; feasibility, practicality, sensor accuracy, and learning effectiveness are not claimed at this stage.

Abstract

Mastery of digital logic concepts is a fundamental competency for electrical engineering education students. However, the limited availability of commercial laboratory hardware trainers has caused learning in the Digital Techniques course to be dominantly theoretical and software-simulated. This gap makes it difficult for students to understand physical wiring, input-output (I/O) identification, and troubleshooting procedures. This study aims to design, develop, and test the functional validity of DIGILOGIC, an open-source PLC Outseal-based digital logic trainer kit programmed via Outseal Studio software. The research method applied is Research and Development (R&D) using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), reported up to the development phase. The results demonstrated 100% physical completion of the trainer hardware, which integrates an Outseal Mega V.3 PLC, NO/NC push buttons, pilot lamps, a digital DC voltmeter, and industrial banana jack terminals on a custom acrylic panel. In addition, an 85% drafted practical jobsheet covering fundamental gates, self-holding circuits, timers, and counters was established. Internal laboratory testing proved that the hardware exhibits 100% accuracy in Boolean logic response and high voltage stability. DIGILOGIC serves as an economical, reproducible, and effective practical instructional media.
