Abstract

The Flight Information Display System (FIDS) is a primary channel for real-time flight information at airports, yet its discrete contribution to passenger experience remains under-quantified at medium-sized Indonesian airports. This study employed a cross-sectional survey of 100 departing passengers at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin (SMB) II International Airport, Palembang, during morning peak hours, complemented by semi-structured interviews with information-desk staff, airport operations personnel, and passengers. Simple linear regression was used to examine the relationship between perceived FIDS effectiveness and passenger experience. FIDS was positively associated with passenger experience (t = 6.596, p < .001), explaining 30.7% of the variance (R² = .307; 95% CI for B [0.383, 0.713]). Qualitative interviews corroborated the quantitative pattern, identifying update delays as a source of repeated manual enquiries. FIDS effectiveness is a statistically significant but partial determinant of passenger experience, suggesting that complementary terminal factors (ground handling, self-check-in, physical comfort) account for most of the remaining variance. The findings support targeted interventions in FIDS maintenance, screen placement, and airline-to-FIDS data pipelines. The study provides an empirical, single-predictor benchmark for FIDS effectiveness at a medium-sized airport, offering a conservative effect-size estimate that can inform future multi-predictor models of terminal service efficiency.
