Abstract

Preoperative anxiety is a common psychological response to concerns about surgery, anesthesia, and possible complications. Finger-gripping relaxation is a simple non-pharmacological technique that may help reduce anxiety and promote psychological readiness before surgery. This study aimed to determine the effect of finger-gripping relaxation on anxiety levels among preoperative patients at RSUD Limpung. A descriptive case study with a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted involving five preoperative patients. Anxiety was assessed using the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) before and after finger-gripping relaxation, administered once daily for approximately 15 minutes over two consecutive days. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical assessments, questionnaires, and documentation. Before the intervention, one respondent (20%) experienced severe anxiety and four (80%) experienced moderate anxiety, with a mean APAIS score of 17.2. After the intervention, four respondents (80%) experienced mild anxiety and one (20%) experienced moderate anxiety, with the mean score decreasing to 14.2. All respondents showed decreased APAIS scores, with a mean reduction of 3.0 points. These findings indicate that finger-gripping relaxation was associated with reduced preoperative anxiety and may serve as a practical complementary nursing intervention. Further studies with larger samples and control groups are needed.
