Abstract

Picky eating behavior selective eating habits and high screen time prolonged use of screen-based electronic devices are factors that may contribute to Underweight among preschool children. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between picky eating behavior and screen time with Underweight among preschool children aged 5–6 years at Perwati Kindergarten, Aursakti Village, in 2026. This study was conducted from May to June 2026 using a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 48 respondents selected using a total sampling technique. Picky eating behavior was measured using the Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ), while screen time was assessed using a questionnaire. Underweight was measured based on Body Mass Index-for-Age (BMI-for-Age) with a z-score of < -2 SD. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-Square statistical test. Based on the test results, 32 respondents (66.7%) did not exhibit picky eater behavior, 28 respondents (58.3%) had high screen time, and 28 respondents (58.3%) were not underweight. The Chi-Square test results showed a p-value of 0.017 for the relationship between picky eater behavior and underweight and a p-value of 0.004 for the relationship between screen time and underweight. There was a significant relationship between picky eater behavior and screen time with underweight. Parental supervision and restriction of gadget use are needed to maintain children's nutritional status.
