Abstract

Player retention is a strategic priority in gacha games, yet interface quality alone cannot fully explain why players continue to engage. This study examines how Digital Subculture Perception and Digital User Experience shape Player Retention, with Player Satisfaction as a mediating mechanism. A quantitative explanatory design was applied using cross-sectional survey data from 81 valid gacha game player cases in Indonesia, analysed with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). Results show that both Digital Subculture Perception and Digital User Experience have positive and significant effects on Player Satisfaction, which subsequently increases Player Retention. Digital Subculture Perception also exerts a direct effect on Player Retention, whereas Digital User Experience does not. Mediation analysis indicates that Player Satisfaction fully mediates the effect of Digital User Experience on Player Retention and partially mediates the effect of Digital Subculture Perception. These findings suggest that retention strategies should combine stable, enjoyable digital experiences with community identity, symbolic belonging, and fandom rituals rather than relying on interface quality alone. This research contributes an integrated mediation model linking digital subculture and user experience to gacha game retention within the Indonesian player-community context.
