Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between knowledge of balanced nutrition, body image, and nutritional status among adolescents at SMAN 3 Jombang. A quantitative method with a cross-sectional design was employed. The sample consisted of 97 adolescents from grades 10 and 11, selected using stratified random sampling. Body image data were collected using the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scale (MBSRQ-AS), and nutrition knowledge data were gathered via a validated and reliable multiple-choice questionnaire; nutritional status was assessed using the Body Mass Index-for-age (BMI-for-age) indicator. The collected data were analyzed using the Spearman-rank correlation test. The results revealed a significant relationship between body image and nutritional status (p < 0.001; r = 0.53), indicating a moderate strength of association. Conversely, no significant relationship was found between knowledge of balanced nutrition and nutritional status (p = 0.663). Efforts to improve adolescent nutritional status need to address psychological aspects, specifically the development of a positive body image and the enhancement of nutrition knowledge. In conclusion, body image influences nutritional status; therefore, adolescents are encouraged to cultivate a positive body image and adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors, including dietary habits aligned with balanced nutrition principles, to maintain optimal nutritional status.
