Abstract

Vertigo is a vestibular system disorder characterized by a spinning sensation, nausea, vomiting, and balance disturbances that can impair daily activities. Management of vertigo involves not only pharmacological approaches but also non-pharmacological therapies, such as the Brandt-Daroff Exercise, which aims to facilitate vestibular system adaptation and reduce symptoms. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the Brandt-Daroff Exercise in reducing vertigo intensity among patients at RSUD Kartini Karanganyar Hospital. A case study involving two vertigo patients admitted to Bangsal Cempaka 3 and Mawar 1 wards at RSUD Kartini Karanganyar Hospital. Vertigo intensity was measured using the Visual Vertigo Analogue Scale (VVAS). The Brandt-Daroff Exercise intervention was administered for three days, twice daily, following standard procedures. The study results showed that both patients had severe vertigo (high VVAS scores) before the intervention. After three days of exercises, VVAS scores decreased gradually and consistently, reaching the mild category. The Brandt-Daroff Exercise is effective as a non-pharmacological intervention for reducing vertigo intensity.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major health problem that can increase the risk of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and renal complications. Its management includes pharmacological therapy and may be supported by non-pharmacological relaxation techniques. This study aimed to describe the results of applying a combination of finger grip relaxation and slow deep breathing to blood pressure in hypertensive patients at the Emergency Department of RSUD Kartini Karanganyar. A case study design involving two hypertensive respondents was used. The intervention was conducted on February 18, 2026, during one visit for 15 minutes. Blood pressure was measured before the intervention and every five minutes during the procedure. Both respondents experienced a decrease in blood pressure. In Mrs. S, blood pressure decreased from 180/113 mmHg to 150/92 mmHg, while in Mr. S it decreased from 175/100 mmHg to 150/88 mmHg. The decrease occurred gradually at the 5th, 10th, and 15th minutes. The combined technique showed a reduction in blood pressure in both respondents and may be considered a supportive non-pharmacological intervention in nursing care, while clinical condition and medical treatment should remain the primary considerations.
