Abstract

Indonesia’s tropical climate results in year-round exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, making adequate sun protection an important component of skin health. Sunscreen is one of the most accessible measures for reducing UV exposure; however, its effectiveness depends not only on availability but also on appropriate knowledge and attitudes toward its use. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University, regarding sunscreen use. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 112 medical students selected using consecutive sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire assessing respondents’ knowledge and attitudes toward sunscreen use. The findings showed that the majority of respondents demonstrated good knowledge regarding sunscreen, including its benefits and appropriate use. Similarly, most respondents exhibited favorable attitudes toward sunscreen use, indicating positive awareness of the importance of sun protection. These findings suggest that medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University, generally possess adequate knowledge and positive attitudes toward sunscreen use. Nevertheless, knowledge and attitudes alone may not necessarily reflect consistent sunscreen practices. Further research is warranted to explore the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and actual sunscreen use, as well as other factors influencing sun-protection behavior among medical students.
