Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of the belis tradition in the novel Belis Imamat by Inyo Soro. The method employed is qualitative descriptive analysis using a Critical Discourse Analysis approach based on Norman Fairclough’s model. The results of the study show that the representation of the belis tradition in the novel Belis Imamat is constructed through three dimensions of Critical Discourse Analysis. In the textual dimension, belis is represented as a symbol of respect for the woman’s family, a man’s responsibility, and an important part of traditional marriage, while also revealing conflicts, social pressures, economic burdens, and power relations resulting from traditional customs. In terms of discourse practice, the novel is understood as a product of discourse rooted in the social reality of East Nusa Tenggara society, as well as the author’s experiences, perspectives, and objectives in critiquing the shifting meanings of belis. In terms of sociocultural practice, the representation of the belis tradition is influenced by situational, institutional, and social contexts. Families and customary institutions play a dominant role in determining the recognition of marriages and regulating individual behavior, while at the social level, belis reveals the relationship between respect, social stratification, power relations, and economic burdens.
