Abstract

This classroom action research investigated the use of Mission Card Game-Based Learning with role rotation to improve basic football skills and student engagement in fifth-grade physical education. The participants were all 28 students in one intact class (14 boys and 14 girls), selected using saturated sampling. The study comprised a pre-cycle and two action cycles. Students worked in seven groups across four learning stations Passing Mission, Control Mission, Dribbling Mission, and Combination Mission with Level 1–3 challenges and rotating roles as performer, peer assessor, score recorder, and equipment keeper. Football skills were assessed using an analytic performance rubric, whereas engagement was measured using a 16-item questionnaire covering behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and agentic dimensions. Data were analyzed descriptively across phases. The mean overall football-skill score increased from 57.56 in the pre-cycle to 71.96 in Cycle I and 80.89 in Cycle II; the proportion of students achieving mastery increased from 14.29% to 57.14% and 85.71%. Overall engagement increased from 60.71 to 69.75 and 78.35, while active/very active participation rose from 32.14% to 82.14% and 100%. The intervention met the predefined success criteria in Cycle II.
