Abstract

Pak choi is a vegetable from the Brassicaceae family whose leaves are consumed as food, either fresh or processed. This study aims to determine the interaction between the appropriate method and location of biochar compost application on the growth and yield of pak choi (Brassica rapa L.) in dryland entisols. This study used a Split Plot Design consisting of two factors: the main plot and the subplot. The main plot was the application location ( ) consisting of 2 levels, namely hole cultivation ( ) and furrow cultivation ( ). The subplot was the application method ( ) consisting of 3 levels, namely without biochar compost ( ), embedded in the soil ( ), and mixed with soil media ( ), yielding a combination of 6 treatments (  and ) replicated 3 times to obtain 18 experimental units. Observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, fresh shoot weight, fresh root weight, and root length. The results showed an interaction between the biochar compost application method and placement on plant height at 28 days after planting (DAP) and root length. The single treatment of the application method, particularly mixing biochar compost with the soil, significantly affected plant height at 7–28 DAP, number of leaves at 7–21 DAP, fresh shoot weight, and fresh root weight. Meanwhile, the application placement in planting holes significantly influenced plant height at 7–21 and 28 DAP, fresh shoot weight, fresh root weight, and root length.
