Abstract

This study was prompted by the discovery of a substantial assemblage of ancient ceramics during an accidental excavation by residents in a plantation area in Mekar Alam Village, Seberang Kota Subdistrict, West Tanjung Jabung Regency, in 2021. Since the finds had not been chronologically identified, this study aimed to determine their materials, forms, types, and periods. The study employed archaeological research methods, beginning with a preliminary survey and followed by data collection using purposive sampling. The analysis identified 921 Chinese ceramic bowls classified into three categories based on glaze characteristics: Yue ware, Anhui yellow-glazed ceramics (Anhui Lime Glazes), and Five Dynasties white-glazed ceramics (Five Dynasties Whiteware Glazes). These categories indicate a chronology spanning the ninth to tenth centuries CE, encompassing the late Tang and Five Dynasties periods rather than the Tang Dynasty exclusively. The typological and chronological identification of this assemblage provides archaeological evidence for understanding Mekar Alam within the wider circulation of Chinese ceramics and the historical trade networks that connected the region to external commercial centers during this period.
