Abstract

Indonesia has a rich heritage of mythological stories that can be utilized as sources of ideas for writing fantasy texts. This study aims to analyze the use of Indonesian mythological stories as material for writing fantasy narratives. The study is motivated by the need for creative sources of inspiration in fantasy writing and by the continuing dominance of world-building patterns derived from Western fantasy traditions, while the richness of Indonesian mythology has not yet been optimally utilized. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method. The research data consist of various Indonesian mythological stories selected based on the diversity of their mythological elements, such as mythological characters and creatures, sacred places, customary taboos, and cultural artifacts. Data were collected through document analysis and examined using content analysis, which involved data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Indonesian mythological stories have considerable potential as material for writing fantasy texts because they provide narrative elements that can support character development, world-building, conflict development, and systematic story resolution. The use of these mythological elements can produce narrative structures that are more coherent, original, and rooted in local cultural values. In addition to helping writers develop ideas more creatively, the use of Indonesian mythological stories can also strengthen the representation of cultural identity in modern fantasy literature. This study produces a conceptual model for utilizing Indonesian mythological stories as material for writing fantasy texts, which can serve as a reference for creative writing activities and culturally based writing instruction. The findings are expected to contribute to the development of creative writing studies while supporting the preservation and revitalization of Indonesia’s cultural heritage through literary works.
