Abstract

Artificial sweeteners such as saccharin and sodium cyclamate are commonly used in foods and beverages; however, their usage must not exceed the limits established by the Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) Regulation No. 29 of 2021, which sets maximum levels at 120 mg/kg for saccharin and 11 mg/kg for sodium cyclamate. Objective: This study aimed to identify and determine the levels of saccharin and sodium cyclamate in beras kencur herbal drinks with the sample code (JBKS) sold at Gadingrejo Market. Methods: The identification of saccharin was conducted using a qualitative test with resorcinol reagent, while sodium cyclamate was identified through a precipitation test. Quantitative analysis of saccharin and sodium cyclamate levels was performed using the Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC) method at a wavelength of 220 nm, with a mobile phase of methanol HPLC grade: aquabidest (80:20), stationary phase C18 octadecyl silica column, flow rate of 1 mL/min, retention time of 3 minutes, and injection volume of 20 µL. Results: The findings revealed that among seven beras kencur samples, one sample tested positive for saccharin, indicated by a green fluorescence color change. The quantitative analysis showed that the saccharin concentration in sample code JBKS 4 was 51,957mg in 3 servings a day. Conclusion: The saccharin level found in the sample exceeded the regulatory threshold, indicating that the beras kencur herbal drink is unsafe for consumption.

Abstract

Cough self-medication is a self-treatment effort widely practiced by the public using over-the-counter (OTC) and limited over-the-counter (limited OTC) drugs. The high prevalence of self-medication practices requires good knowledge to ensure that drug usage is carried out appropriately, safely, and rationally. This research objective is to determine the correlation between knowledge levels and the usage behavior of over-the-counter and limited over-the-counter drugs for cough self-medication in the community of Sidodadi Pardasuka Village. This research is a descriptive-analytic study utilizing a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 3,443 people, with a sample size of 98 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, and then analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Spearman's Rank correlation test. The results showed that most respondents had a good level of knowledge and good drug usage behavior. Bivariate analysis showed a correlation coefficient value of 0.597, indicating a moderate positive relationship between knowledge levels and the usage behavior of over-the-counter and limited over-the-counter drugs for cough self-medication, with a p-value < 0.001, meaning the correlation is significant. In conclusion, there is a positive and significant correlation between knowledge levels and the usage behavior of over-the-counter and limited over-the-counter drugs for cough self-medication in the community of Sidodadi Pardasuka Village. The better the community's level of knowledge, the better their drug usage behavior in cough self-medication.
