Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a serious public health problem. Low levels of knowledge and non-adherence to treatment are major factors contributing to treatment failure and an increased risk of drug resistance. This study aims to analyze the effect of education on the knowledge and adherence of tuberculosis patients. A pre-experimental study design with a one-group pre-test and post-test design was used, employing total sampling of 35 patients. Data were collected using a validated TB knowledge questionnaire and the MMAS-8, and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 75 to 83, with the good category rising from 54.3% to 74.3%. Adherence increased from 6.82 (moderate) to 7.55 (high), with the high category rising from 42.9% to 57.1%. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.002 for knowledge and p = 0.017 for adherence (p < 0.05). It was concluded that education using Microsoft PowerPoint and leaflets had a significant effect on improving knowledge and treatment adherence among tuberculosis patients.

Abstract

Artificial sweeteners such as saccharin and sodium cyclamate are commonly used in foods and beverages; however, their usage must not exceed the limits established by the Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) Regulation No. 29 of 2021, which sets maximum levels at 120 mg/kg for saccharin and 11 mg/kg for sodium cyclamate. Objective: This study aimed to identify and determine the levels of saccharin and sodium cyclamate in beras kencur herbal drinks with the sample code (JBKS) sold at Gadingrejo Market. Methods: The identification of saccharin was conducted using a qualitative test with resorcinol reagent, while sodium cyclamate was identified through a precipitation test. Quantitative analysis of saccharin and sodium cyclamate levels was performed using the Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC) method at a wavelength of 220 nm, with a mobile phase of methanol HPLC grade: aquabidest (80:20), stationary phase C18 octadecyl silica column, flow rate of 1 mL/min, retention time of 3 minutes, and injection volume of 20 µL. Results: The findings revealed that among seven beras kencur samples, one sample tested positive for saccharin, indicated by a green fluorescence color change. The quantitative analysis showed that the saccharin concentration in sample code JBKS 4 was 51,957mg in 3 servings a day. Conclusion: The saccharin level found in the sample exceeded the regulatory threshold, indicating that the beras kencur herbal drink is unsafe for consumption.

Abstract

Acne is a common skin condition caused by excess oil production. Propionibacterium acnes is one of the bacteria involved in the development of acne. Long-term use of antibiotics to treat acne can cause side effects and bacterial resistance, making alternative treatments derived from natural sources necessary. Robusta coffee beans and green cincau leaves are known to contain secondary metabolites with potential antibacterial properties. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of a combination of Robusta coffee bean (Coffea canephora) and green cincau leaf (Cyclea barbata Miers) extracts against the growth of Propionibacterium acnes, as well as to identify significant differences in their antibacterial activity. This study employed a quantitative experimental method. Phytochemical screening was conducted for alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins, while the antibacterial activity test used the disk diffusion method with three concentration variations of the extract combination: 12.5% : 15%, 25% : 30%, and 50% : 60%. Clindamycin was used as the positive control and sterile distilled water as the negative control. The results of the phytochemical screening showed that both extracts contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. The combination of Robusta coffee bean extract and green cincau leaf extract exhibited antibacterial activity, with average inhibition zone diameters of 4.49 mm, 6.12 mm, and 6.13 mm, respectively. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in antibacterial activity with p-values <0.05. The study concluded that the combination of Robusta coffee bean extract and green cincau leaf extract is capable of inhibiting the growth of Propionibacterium acnes, exhibiting weak to moderate antibacterial activity.

Abstract

Cough self-medication is a self-treatment effort widely practiced by the public using over-the-counter (OTC) and limited over-the-counter (limited OTC) drugs. The high prevalence of self-medication practices requires good knowledge to ensure that drug usage is carried out appropriately, safely, and rationally. This research objective is to determine the correlation between knowledge levels and the usage behavior of over-the-counter and limited over-the-counter drugs for cough self-medication in the community of Sidodadi Pardasuka Village. This research is a descriptive-analytic study utilizing a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 3,443 people, with a sample size of 98 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, and then analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Spearman's Rank correlation test. The results showed that most respondents had a good level of knowledge and good drug usage behavior. Bivariate analysis showed a correlation coefficient value of 0.597, indicating a moderate positive relationship between knowledge levels and the usage behavior of over-the-counter and limited over-the-counter drugs for cough self-medication, with a p-value < 0.001, meaning the correlation is significant. In conclusion, there is a positive and significant correlation between knowledge levels and the usage behavior of over-the-counter and limited over-the-counter drugs for cough self-medication in the community of Sidodadi Pardasuka Village. The better the community's level of knowledge, the better their drug usage behavior in cough self-medication.

Abstract

Abstract Vitamin C is an antioxidant compound widely used in skin care products due to its ability to ward off free radicals and help maintain healthy skin. Lotions on the market often list vitamin C as an active ingredient, but the levels and antioxidant activity can vary from product to product. This study aims to determine the vitamin C content and analyze its antioxidant levels and activity. Vitamin C is an antioxidant compound widely used in skin care products due to its ability to ward off free radicals and help maintain healthy skin. However, its antioxidant levels and activity can vary from product to product. Using a purposive sampling technique, the study samples consisted of ten lotions with different trademarks. For qualitative analysis, KMnO4 reagent was used, while quantitative analysis was carried out by determining vitamin C levels and testing antioxidant activity using the DPPH method with UV-Vis spectrophotometry measurements. The results showed that of the 10 samples tested, 5 samples (L/3, L/5, L/8, L/9, and L/10) showed positive vitamin C levels; the color changed to brown after the addition of KMnO4. The highest vitamin C content was obtained in sample L/3 at 0.0015%, while the lowest content was in sample L/10 at 0.0007%. The results of the antioxidant activity test showed that the IC50 value of sample L/3 was 130.80 µg/mL, L/5 was 97.09 µg/mL, and L/10 was 62.15 µg/mL. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that lotion products sold in the Gisting Market cosmetic store have different vitamin C content and antioxidant activity in each sample
