Abstract

The effect of Momordica charantia on intestinal histopathology in Salmonella typhi-infected mice remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate histological changes in the small intestine following administration of M. charantia juice at graded doses. Twenty paraffin-embedded ileum samples from previously infected mice were divided into four groups: infected untreated control (K), and three treatment groups receiving 50 g (P1), 100 g (P2), and 200 g (P3) of bitter melon juice. Histological assessment included measurements of mucosa, villi, crypts, and muscle layer thickness, as well as inflammation scoring using the Barthel Mandja system. The 100 g dose (P2) yielded the greatest improvement in mucosal and villous height and showed a complete shift from severe to moderate inflammation. Crypt depth was significantly different among groups (p = 0.001), with P2 showing the most normalized architecture. However, mucosa, villi, and muscle layers showed no statistically significant differences. These findings suggest that M. charantia at a 100 g dose offers optimal protection of intestinal architecture and reduces inflammatory severity in S. typhi-infected mice. Higher doses may reduce efficacy, highlighting the need for dose optimization.
