Abstract

Verbal violence has become an increasingly visible ethical problem in contemporary social and digital communication, yet it is often reduced to a merely linguistic deviation rather than examined as a moral practice that affects human dignity and social cohesion. This study aims to analyze the Qur’anic worldview on verbal violence by comparing the terms al-lamz and al-hamz, identifying their semantic distinctions, relational meanings, and ethical implications within the Qur’anic value system. The research employs a qualitative library-based design that integrates thematic interpretation with Toshihiko Izutsu’s Qur’anic semantic framework. The analysis proceeds through the identification of relevant verses, examination of basic and relational meanings, mapping of semantic fields, and formulation of the Qur’anic weltanschauung on communication ethics. The findings demonstrate that al-lamz and al-hamz are not synonymous. Al-Lamz denotes direct, overt, and confrontational forms of ridicule, reproach, or disparagement, whereas al-hamz refers to covert, symbolic, and manipulative practices that operate through insinuation, gossip, slander, or indirect gestures. Their relationships with concepts such as sukhriyah, tanābuz bi al-alqāb, ghībah, namīmah, nifāq, and ẓulm reveal that verbal violence constitutes a graded ethical spectrum with distinct personal and social consequences. The study concludes that the Qur’an treats language as a morally accountable act and places the protection of karāmah insāniyyah and social harmony at the center of communication ethics, offering a relevant conceptual framework for addressing verbal violence in contemporary interpersonal and digital contexts.
