Abstract

The revitalization of Ranomeeto Market should address not only physical capacity but also the creation of a public space that accommodates economic activities, user comfort, and the social character of a traditional market. Based on activity and spatial-needs data, Ranomeeto Market is a type-A market located in a strategic area between South Konawe Regency and Kendari City, occupying 6,000 m² of land. Operational data as of 1 September 2026 indicate 180 kiosks and 128 stalls, occupied by 130 kiosk traders, 60 stall traders, and 215 courtyard traders. Major commodities include horticulture and food products, fishery and livestock products, clothing and second-hand goods, and food and beverage services. This study aims to analyze the implications of activity and spatial-needs data for the application of a place-making approach to the revitalization of Ranomeeto Market. A descriptive-qualitative method was employed by analyzing operational data, commodity characteristics, trading activities, and functional spatial requirements. The analysis indicates that place-making should be implemented through clear zoning of wet, semi-wet/dry, textile and second-hand goods, and culinary areas, supported by separated logistics and pedestrian circulation, improved sanitation, parking, and communal facilities. Therefore, revitalization should go beyond physical improvement by creating a hygienic, ergonomic, accessible, and socially supportive market environment that sustains traders’ economic activities.

Abstract

Early-stage architectural education relies heavily on the understanding of design instructions outlined in the Terms of Reference (TOR). The primary issue in the Architectural Design Studio 1 course at `Halu Oleo University is the absence of a TOR document, which triggers biased interpretations of verbal instructions, academic anxiety, and inefficient consultation sessions. This study aims to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of an interactive and comprehensive digital-based TOR to address these challenges. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with an Action Research approach. Data collection involved 45 students through participatory observation, structured questionnaires, and design document reviews, comparing the pre- and post-intervention cycles. The results indicate that the implementation of the digital-based TOR significantly improved students' understanding across 9 indicators of studio instruction. The highest improvements were observed in the understanding of the final grading system (+75%) and the details of physical studio deliverables (+72%). In addition to shifting the focus of consultations toward analytical discussions, the intervention triggered a surge in the percentage of student designs meeting passing standards, increasing from 40% to 85%. In conclusion, the digital-based TOR effectively minimizes academic disorientation and serves as a pedagogical instrument that facilitates self-guided learning.

Abstract

Architectural space functions not only as a setting for activities but also as a medium through which cultural values, practices, and identities are represented. Among the Tolaki-Mekongga people, Mosehe Wonua is a traditional practice associated with cultural values, historical memory, and the use of space. This study aims to analyze the spatial structure of the Sangia Ni Bandera Tomb Complex in Kolaka as a symbolic representation within the cultural context of Mosehe Wonua. A qualitative descriptive-interpretive approach was employed through field observation, interviews with cultural elders and practitioners, documentation, and literature review. The analysis focused on spatial organization, hierarchy, orientation, boundaries, accessibility, circulation, and relationships between spaces and their associated meanings. The findings indicate that the complex has differentiated spaces based on function, openness, accessibility, and customary rules. The open space at the front of the complex, adjacent to the multipurpose hall and mosque, is associated with collective activities and the implementation of Mosehe Wonua, while the tomb areas have more specific boundaries and customary regulations. These spatial differences demonstrate that meaning is shaped not only by physical configuration but also by cultural practices, customary rules, historical memory, and the transformation of customary and Islamic values. Thus, the spatial structure of the Sangia Ni Bandera Tomb Complex represents the dynamic relationship between physical space, cultural practices, history, and the identity of the Tolaki-Mekongga community.
