Abstract

Participation in sports extracurricular activities is believed to influence adolescents' physical fitness and nutritional status; however, comparative evidence across different sports in distinct geographical contexts remains limited, and previous findings have been inconsistent. This study aimed to analyze differences in physical fitness levels and Body Mass Index (BMI) among extracurricular participants of basketball (SMA Santo Benediktus Pahauman), soccer (SMK Santo Alexius Falconieri Jelimpo), and badminton (SMA Santo Paulus Nyarumkop Singkawang). A quantitative comparative design was employed involving 45 male subjects (15 per group) selected through purposive sampling. BMI was calculated from body weight and height, while physical fitness was measured using the Indonesian Physical Fitness Test (TKJI) for ages 13–15 years. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test (α = 0.05). The results showed that all groups had normal BMI (19.75–21.40 kg/m²). The highest mean fitness score was observed in the badminton group (19.20), followed by soccer (19.13), and the lowest in the basketball group (16.73). The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed no significant differences in either BMI (p = 0.112) or physical fitness (p = 0.098), with medium effect sizes (η² = 0.099 and 0.106). In conclusion, there were no significant differences in BMI and physical fitness levels among the three extracurricular groups.
