Abstract

This study examines the erosion of traditional Bugis agricultural lexical occurring alongside the transformation of agricultural artifacts in Sidenreng Rappang Regency (Sidrap) from the perspective of material ecolinguistics. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, documentation, and a literature review involving ten informants in Panca Rijang and Watang Sidenreng Districts during November and December 2025. The data were analyzed thematically by examining the relationships among lexical meanings, the forms and functions of agricultural artifacts, ecological and cultural values, and their current status of use. The findings identified 20 lexical items referring to agricultural tools. Four remain in active use, while the other 16 are categorized as rarely used, very rarely used, no longer used, or extinct. The concentration of various manual functions in combine harvesters, tractors, pesticide sprayers, and motorized vehicles has reduced the domains in which lexical items such as pabbettang, rakkapeng, pangkureng, kallobise, and patteke are used. This transformation has also weakened the intergenerational transmission of knowledge and shifted ecological relations from collective practices based on locally sourced materials toward efficiency-oriented practices that depend on chemical inputs, plastics, and fossil fuels. The theoretical contribution of this study lies in conceptualizing material ecolinguistics as a framework that connects lexical erosion, artifact transformation, and ecological change within an integrated system of cultural signs.
