Abstract

The limited cultural application of mathematics as a learning resource results in instruction that tends to be abstract and lacking in context for students. The study explores the concept of ethnomathematics within the traditional Haul Syekh Ibrahim Asmoroqondi ceremony practiced by the community in Kuwarisan Village, Kebumen Regency. Through a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study reveals cultural values rich in mathematical meaning, particularly in the ingkung suran tradition held every Friday Kliwon during the month of Muharram or Suro. Data collection methods included participant observation, interviews, and documentary analysis, with key informants being community leaders and managers of the Kebumen Geopark. The findings indicate that number concepts are reflected in the counting activities performed by the community, number sequences are identified through the philosophy of charity, mixed operations are illustrated in the “dhahar kembul” activity, and the least common multiple is used to determine the exact date for conducting the tradition. These findings demonstrate that local culture can serve as a source of enjoyable, contextually relevant mathematics learning while preserving local wisdom. The recommendation based on the findings is that culture-based learning materials be developed to serve as an alternative learning strategy aimed at enhancing students’ mathematical understanding in a meaningful, contextual manner that aligns with their daily lives.
