Abstract

Early reading skills are essential for elementary school students because they serve as the foundation for understanding learning materials at the next educational level. However, based on observations in Grade 1 of SD Negeri 2 Purworejo, several students still experienced difficulties in recognizing letters, reading syllables, and pronouncing simple words. This study aimed to describe the use of alphabet wheel media in improving students’ early reading skills. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of the study were 20 first-grade students of SD Negeri 2 Purworejo in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that the use of alphabet wheel media had a positive impact on students’ learning process and early reading skills. Students became more active, enthusiastic, and confident during the learning activities. They showed improvement in recognizing letters, combining letters into syllables, and reading simple words. In addition, the media created a more interactive and enjoyable learning atmosphere. It can be concluded that alphabet wheel media is effective in improving early reading skills of first-grade students and can be used as an innovative learning medium in elementary schools
