Abstract

ABSTRACT The widespread use of smartphones has given rise to the phenomenon of phubbing within family settings, referring to the behavior of ignoring a person during an interaction by focusing attention on a smartphone. Such behavior is related to communication barriers and closely linked to family functioning, particularly among adolescents who are undergoing social and emotional development. This study aimed to examine the relationship between phubbing behavior and family functioning among adolescents living with their families. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed, involving 155 respondents aged 12–22 years who lived with their families, actively used smartphones during interactions with family members, and were selected through purposive sampling. The results showed a negative relationship between phubbing behavior and family functioning (r = -0.389, p < 0,001), indicating that respondents with higher phubbing scores tended to have lower family functioning scores. Descriptive analysis showed that the majority of respondents were in the moderate category for both variables. Analysis of the dimensions revealed that problem acknowledgement had the highest mean per item for phubbing behavior, whereas communication had the lowest mean per item for family functioning. These findings indicate that although adolescents' awareness of the negative effects of phubbing was relatively high, the behavior persisted and was associated with a gradual decline in family functioning, particularly through disruptions in face-to-face communication, while rarely triggering open conflict within the family. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the dangers of phubbing is not determined solely by the quantity of smartphone use but rather by emotional sensitivity in the form of feelings of being ignored within a collectivist cultural context.

Abstract

General Background Adolescence represents a critical developmental stage where individuals must adapt to new roles and cultivate psychological maturity. Specific Background Numerous university students from regions with limited access, such as Sintang Regency, must migrate and live away from their parents to pursue better educational opportunities. Knowledge Gap Previous literature predominantly explores general student adaptation, leaving the specific dynamics of emotional independence among migrant adolescents during physical separation largely unexplored. Aims This qualitative study investigates how migrant students from Sintang Regency navigate their emotional development while living apart from their parents for educational purposes. Results In-depth interviews with four students aged 17 to 21 revealed that physical separation forces gradual independence through managing homesickness, overcoming fears, and fulfilling daily needs. The developmental process explicitly reflects four dimensions: nondependency, individuation, viewing parents as people, and de-idealization. Migrant students successfully navigate environmental adaptation challenges without requiring direct parental presence, yet they consistently maintain strong long-distance support. Novelty This research demonstrates that achieving psychological maturity during physical separation does not sever familial bonds but rather transforms direct dependency into a balanced, mature distant relationship. Implications Educational institutions and parents should provide supportive long-distance communication frameworks that encourage self-reliance without restricting the adolescent's independent decision-making processes. Highlights Physical separation compels young adults to manage homesickness and fulfill daily obligations independently. Psychological maturity manifests through nondependency and viewing family figures from highly realistic perspectives. Consistent long-distance communication preserves supportive bonds while fostering independent decision-making processes.
