Abstract

Sedimentation in irrigation channels is one of the problems that can reduce flow capacity and disrupt water distribution to agricultural land. This study aims to analyze sediment characteristics based on grain size distribution as a basis for determining sedimentation management in the Batang Anai Irrigation System Primary Channel. Sediment samples were collected at nine observation points using the Petersen Grab method. Grain size distribution was analyzed through sieve and hydrometer tests and presented as grain size distribution curves. Sediment characteristics were determined based on characteristic grain size parameters, namely d15.9, d25, d50, d75, and d84.1, as well as Geometric Standard Deviation (σg) and Sorting Coefficient (Sc). The results showed that the d50 values ranged from 0.124 to 0.492 mm, indicating that the sediments were predominantly fine to medium sand. The σg values ranged from 1.134 to 2.323, indicating that all samples had poorly uniform grain size distributions. Meanwhile, the Sc values ranged from 1.097 to 1.707, indicating a moderate degree of sediment sorting. These characteristics indicate the potential for sediment deposition in certain channel segments, particularly where flow velocity decreases. Based on the sediment characteristics, the recommended management measures include periodic sediment dredging, routine channel maintenance, optimization of sedimentation basins, and repair of damaged channel sections. The results of this study provide a basis for determining appropriate sedimentation management and maintenance strategies for the Batang Anai Irrigation System Primary Channel.
