Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most common degenerative health problems experienced by the elderly, with a growing prevalence both globally and nationally. This condition requires non-pharmacological intervention as a companion to medical therapy to help control blood pressure. Swedish massage is a classic massage technique consisting of five main movements, namely effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, and vibration, which is known to be able to lower blood pressure through the mechanism of decreasing sympathetic nervous system activity and increasing parasympathetic activity. This study aims to describe the application of Swedish massage therapy in lowering blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension at the Tresna Werdha Social Care Unit Budi Luhur, Yogyakarta. The research method used an observational case study with a nursing care approach and a pre-post test design on two elderly clients with hypertension. The intervention was given once a day for five consecutive days, each session lasting 15 minutes. The results showed a consistent decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in both clients. Client 1 experienced a decrease from 157/72 mmHg to 107/52 mmHg, while Client 2 from 156/76 mmHg to 111/68 mmHg. Both clients also reported feeling more relaxed and comfortable after therapy. These findings confirm that Swedish massage is an effective, safe, and inexpensive non-pharmacological nursing intervention to help control hypertension in the elderly.
