Abstract

This research discusses the phoneme changes in loanwords from foreign languages into Sundanese. The purpose of this study is to explain the process and forms of phoneme changes that occur when a word from a foreign language is incorporated into the Sundanese phonological system. The method used is qualitative descriptive research, by collecting data from dictionaries, everyday conversations, and previous journals. The results of the study show that phoneme changes are usually used to adjust foreign sounds to Sundanese phonological patterns. The changes found include assimilation, vowel reduction, deletion, and insertion, which occur through the processes of assimilation and elimination. For example, the word askes (originating from the English word 'Access') undergoes morphological and phonological adaptation to match the phoneme system of the Sundanese language. Another example is loanwords from Dutch such as the word strip (originating from 'Streep') which undergoes an assimilation process, as well as the word dunya (originating from the Arabic 'Dunyaa') which undergoes an elimination or sound deletion process. The educational implication is to provide concrete examples for learning the process of phonological assimilation and local language adaptation under foreign language influence. In terms of socio-cultural implications, the Sundanese language is open to external influences, so that adaptation of Sundanese language to foreign languages does not eliminate the original characteristics of Sundanese, which can serve as a basis for the development of the Sundanese language.
