Abstract

This article explores the dowry in Islam, and its reactualization in the context of unique dowry practices in Indonesia. By referring to historical analysis based on the asbabun nuzul of Surah An-Nisa' verse 24, particularly from the narration of Ibn Jarir, this study examines how the value of dowry is reinterpreted in the context of contemporary social, economy, and cultural phenomena. This study uses a qualitative method with a library research approach, utilizing primary sources such as Lubab al-Nuqul fi Asbab al-Nuzul by Imam Suyuti and secondary sources such as books, journals, and articles related to the topic. The discussion includes the definition of dowry, asbabun nuzul and interpretation of Surah An-Nisa' verse 24, as well as an analysis of the re-actualization of the value of dowry in the unique dowry phenomenon in Indonesia. This study reveals that dowry is not merely a material transaction, but also a symbol of responsibility, affection, and commitment from husband to wife. The unique dowry practice in Indonesia, influenced by local culture, social status, and economic capacity, reflects a dynamic understanding of dowry that aligns with Islamic principles while adapting to the modern context. This article concludes that this phenomenon demonstrates a progressive approach to dowry, where it serves as a medium of expression in Islamic law, emphasizing sincerity, and the fulfillment of women's rights.
