Abstract

Culture-specific items (CSIs) in ASEAN children's literature often contain cultural references that are difficult to transfer across languages without affecting their original meanings. Therefore, this study aims to identify the categories of CSIs, analyze the translation techniques used, and determine the translation ideology reflected in A Multilingual Anthology of ASEAN Children's Stories. This study employed a mixed-method approach combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. The data, consisting of culture-specific items identified in eleven ASEAN children's stories, were analyzed using Newmark's classification of culture-specific items, translation techniques proposed by Doni Jaya, Molina and Albir, and Newmark, as well as Venuti's theory of translation ideology. The findings show that Material Culture was the most dominant category of culture-specific items identified in the anthology. Thirteen translation techniques were found, with Literal Equivalent, Couplet, and Transference being the most frequently used. The frequent use of these techniques shows that the translator tended to maintain the cultural elements of the source text. As a result, foreignization emerged as the dominant translation ideology in the anthology.
