Abstract

There are four problems in translating a text. The first and main problem is the language factor. The second problem is a social one, the third is the problem that has something to do with religion or belief, and the fourth one is the cultural problem. In short, the problems have a close relation to the language and culture. So, a translator should have a good mastery of the two languages, namely, the source language and the target one. This article discusses the problems of translation having to do with culture and its impacts to translation. The strategy of a translator to overcome the problems is determined by his/her ideology: domestication or foreignization.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the variations of the lexical category of the style markers in a self-translation from English to Indonesian and their roles in expressing the perceptions of the self-translator. This is a pilot research with a qualitative approach. The data are obtained from the novel The Question of Red (TQOR) and its Indonesia translation, Amba. In this context, Laksmi Pamuntjak acts as both the ST writer and the TT producer (as a self-translator). TQOR and Amba use lexical style markers that are not exactly the same, involving variations. The variations of the lexical category of style markers can be classified into: marker reduction, attribute reduction, marker transposition, marker extension, and invariation of marker. This variations are the impacts of the use of various translation strategies, which in turn also change the perception of self-translator of the themes she wants to express.

Abstract

Literary translation are often faced with problems of equivalence, faithfulness, accuracy, and naturalness. This becomes more complex because the author can choose between many options. Therefore, the author’s choice of style has roles in representing his ideology. This study discusses literary translation by the author herself. This study aims at explaining whether the case of self-translation of the novel The Question of Red (TQOR) and Amba experienced distinction in the lexical category of style markers which led to a potential difference in the self-translator's ideology. A qualitative research method with Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach was used to reveal the ideological representation. The data sources are an English novel, TQOR, and its Indonesian translation, Amba. The research data are nouns in source text and their translation which represent the self-translator’s ideology. The analysis followed Fairclough’s model of description, interpretation, and explanation. The results show that the ST has more nouns as the lexical style markers than the TT. In both texts, abstract nouns are used more frequently than concrete nouns which offers more affective involvement so that the readers of both texts can feel the experience of the characters rather than giving sensory perceptions to the readers. Keywords: ideological representation, style markers, nouns, self-translation AbstrakPenerjemahan karya sastra selalu dihadapkan pada permasalahan kesepadanan, kesetiaan, keakuratan, dan kealamiahan yang dapat menjadi lebih rumit karena pengarang dapat menggunakan gaya bahasa yang khusus. Penelitian ini membahas kasus penerjemahan karya sastra yang dilakukan oleh pengarangnya sendiri (swaterjemah). Penelitian ini bertujuan melihat apakah kasus swaterjemah novel The Question of Red (TQOR) dan Amba mengalami pergeseran gaya bahasa kategori leksikal yang mengarah pada potensi pergeseran ideologi pengarang-penerjemah. Metode penelitian kualitatif dengan analisis wacana kritis Fairclough digunakan untuk mengungkap ideologi pengarang-penerjemah. Sumber data berupa novel berbahasa Inggris, TQOR, dan terjemahan bahasa Indonesianya, Amba. Data penelitian adalah nomina di dalam TSu dan terjemahannya dalam TSa yang merepresentasikan persepsi ideologis pengarang-penerjemah. Analisis menggunakan model AWK Fairclough, yaitu deskripsi, interpretasi, dan eksplanasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa TSu memiliki lebih banyak pemarkah gaya bahasa kategori leksikal nomina daripada TSa. Pada kedua teks, nomina abstrak lebih banyak digunakan daripada nomina konkret. Dengan demikian pengarang-penerjemah lebih menawarkan keterlibatan afektif agar pembaca turut merasakan pengalaman tokoh-tokohnya daripada memberikan persepsi indrawi. Kata Kunci: representasi ideologis, gaya bahasa, nomina, swaterjemah

Abstract

Some explorative methods have been done in teaching translation. The approach used in this method is based on the writer’s experience during his teaching. This method is aimed at (1) introducing students to translating business, (2) giving more exposure to students in practicing translating texts, (3) exploring students’ experiences in applying translation theories and strategies, and (4) developing process-based translation research to extend translation teaching methods. The explorative-experience-based translation project is a teaching method in translating-interpreting class which allows students to explore their experience in the ‘real’ translation activities and industry as well as to apply their knowledge on translation theory and strategies of translation. The steps performed in this method are (1) giving brief description to students about business in translation, (2) introducing them to publishers, (3) guiding them in writing proposals for translation field work, (4) conducting advisory during the students’ field work (consisting class discussion and problem solving), (5) interviewing students’ difficulties during their projects, (6) recording students’ major problems (in terms of sentence and text types), and (7) expanding this procedure with a process-based research by the teacher or lecturer. The students involved in this class should have taken some basic courses as introduction to translation (translation studies), translating practice, or other related courses available in the department. Some opportunities and treats are explored through this method. These can enhance teachers’ strategy and method in translating-interpreting class. Abstract

This study aims to identify the kinds of attitudinal systems, its realization, the translation technique, and equivalence in TT. The study was applied product-oriented research design. The data sources are the novel To All the Boys I Loved Before by Jenny Han and its Indonesian translation. The data were in the form of clauses in the ST that show attitude and their translation in the TT in the form of clauses. The data only include the expressions uttered or shown by the characters in the story. The analysis used appraisal theory by Martin and White (2005), translation techniques by Molina and Albir (2002), and equivalence by Bell (1991). Based on the type of attitudinal system, it was found that all types of attitudinal systems, namely affect, judgment, and appreciation appear in the novel between ST and TT which has relatively the same percentage. Affect has the highest percentage especially in un/happiness and in/security both texts. In terms of the realization of attitudinal system, it is found that the most used frequency is inscribed realization is more frequently use than invoked realization. Both have relatively the same percentage between ST and TT. The target text applied five translation techniques to translate the emotion or feeling in the attitudinal system. The translation techniques used are literal translation (50.7%), amplification (21.7%), modulation (18.5%), establish equivalent (4.7%), and adaptation (4.3%). The translation show found fully equivalent meaning (87.0%), partial equivalent meaning (11.6%), and different meaning (1.4%)

Abstract

This research investigates (1) types of culture-specific items (CSIs), (2) translation techniques applied to CSIs, and (3) translation ideologies employed by the translators of Eka Kurniawan's novel Cantik Itu Luka into its English (Beauty is a Wound) and Russian (Красота – это горе) translations by Annie Tucker and Marina Izvekova, respectively. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study identifies 110 CSIs based on Newmark's classification and analyzes translation techniques through Vinay and Darbelnet’s framework and Venuti’s ideologies of foreignization and domestication. The findings reveal that the culture-specific items (CSIs) identified in the novel fall into several categories: material culture, social culture, organizations, customs, ideas, activities, procedures, concepts, ecology, and gestures and habits. In translating these CSIs, the English version predominantly employed borrowing (39%), amplification (19%), and generalization (13%) techniques. Meanwhile, the Russian translation primarily utilized literal translation (35%), borrowing (28%), and amplification (16%). The English translation's preference for borrowing and amplification techniques aligns with a foreignization ideology, introducing Indonesian culture to English-speaking audiences with minimal alteration. Conversely, the Russian translation leans toward domestication, favoring literal translation (35%) and borrowing (28%) for cultural adaptation.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi strategi penerjemahan yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa dalam kasus penerjemahan nama diri yang terdapat dalam American Indian Mythology, dan mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi mahasiswa tersebut menggunakan strategi dimaksud. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi terhadap pengetahuan mahasiswa dalam hal penelitian penerjemahan yang berbasis pada proses. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif yang mendeskripsikan fenomena dalam proses penerjemahan nama diri oleh mahasiswa. Sumber data berupa buku American Indian Mythology yang ditulis oleh Evelyn Wolfson dan diterbitkan oleh by Enslow Publisher, serta terjemahannya yang dikerjakan oleh para mahasiswa Prodi Bahasa dan Sastar Inggris Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta. Sumber data kedua berupa informasi dari para penerjemah yang didapatkan melalui wawancara untuk mengungkap faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi mahasiswa dalam pengambilan keputusan untuk menggunakan strategi tertentu. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa penerjemah menggunakan beberapa strategi, yaitu copy (91 data), rendetion (43), addition (5), deletion (4), conventionality (3), transposition (1), dancombination of copy, addition dan rendition (1). Copy menjadi teknik yang paling banyak dipilih diikuti dengan rendition. Pertimbangan makna menjadi salah satu faktor penentu pemilihan strategi, antara lain makna semantik, semiotik, dan simbolik. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the different types of verbal humor in the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, classify the translation techniques used to translate the verbal humor in the Indonesian subtitle, and assess the acceptability of the verbal humor translation. This study makes use of both qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative method was used to define, classify, and describe the verbal humor types and the translation techniques. Furthermore, the quantitative method was used to assess the translation's acceptability. The data were analyzed by comparing the dialogue transcript from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with its Indonesian subtitle. The findings show that sarcasm is the most prevalent type of verbal humor. This is consistent with the main character, Willy Wonka, who is highly judgmental and arrogant. The most common translation technique discovered is transfer, which means that the subtitle delivers the verbal humor word for word. The acceptability score of the verbal humor translation is 2.5, indicating that the audience must reread and rethink the humor to understand it. This is not satisfying because it takes the audience's attention away from the movie.Keywords: verbal humor, translation technique, translation quality assessment, sarcasm, movie

Abstract

This article explores the use of Skopos theory in translating children’s literature, focusing on how translation choices should be guided by purpose and context. Cultural sensitivity and alignment with the cognitive and emotional needs of children as readers are emphasized, following Oittinen’s (2000) perspective. Skopos theory supports adaptation beyond strict equivalence, offering a flexible approach to meet the needs of child audiences. The proposed method involves three key stages: (1) analysis, to understand the function of translation in the children’s literature context; (2) production, to create context-appropriate and culturally aware translations; and (3) promotion, to support the effectiveness and reliability of culturally sensitive translations. This study offers a practical framework to address linguistic and cultural challenges in translating for children, promoting a more thoughtful and audience-centred approach to children’s literature translation.
