Abstract

Purpose – The ‘itāb verses in the Qur’an are theologically understood as forms of correction and guidance from God to the Prophet, but the ethical dimensions of these reprimands and their interpretation within local cultural contexts still require further study. This study aims to analyze the cultural interpretation of the ‘itāb verses in Bisyri Mustofa’s Al-Ibrīz and to examine the construction of Qur’anic reprimand ethics based on Javanese culture. Methodology – This research employs a qualitative method based on a literature study, using Al-Ibrīz as the primary source and the interpretation of QS. ‘Abasa/80:1-4, QS. al-Taḥrīm/66:1, QS. al-Aḥzāb/33:37, and QS. al-Ḥujurāt/49:1-2 as the units of analysis. The analysis was conducted by identifying the ethical messages in Bisyri’s interpretation and examining them in relation to Javanese cultural values, such as nguwongke uwong, unggah-ungguh, andhap asor, tepo seliro, and sungkan. Findings – The findings show that Bisyri’s interpretation reveals the ethical dimensions of reprimand in the aspects of da‘wah, leadership, and social relations. Research implications/novelty – The novelty of this study lies in the use of Javanese cultural values as an interpretive framework for constructing Qur’anic reprimand ethics through the interpretation of the ‘itāb verses. Originality/value –  Based on this interpretation, four principles of Qur’anic reprimand ethics can be formulated: respect for dignity, politeness in delivery, an orientation toward improvement, and the preservation of social relationships.
