Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of cultural and civic literacy among fourth-grade students at MI Muhammadiyah Langkap, Brebes Regency, and the limited availability of engaging, contextual local-culture-based teaching materials. This study aimed to produce a flipbook of South Brebes folktales assisted by artificial intelligence and to determine its validity, practicality, and effectiveness in improving students' cultural and civic literacy. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of artificial intelligence into the illustration and script development process of South Brebes folktales, an approach not yet explored in previous flipbook development research. This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method with the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). The subjects were 24 fourth-grade students, with data collected through observation, questionnaires, and documentation, then analyzed using percentage analysis, normality tests, paired sample t-tests, and N-Gain tests. The results showed the flipbook was categorized as highly valid by media, material, and language experts with an average of 91.1%, and highly practical based on student responses at 93.5%. The paired sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), reinforced by an average N-Gain of 65.04%, categorized as effective. Therefore, the artificial intelligence-assisted flipbook of South Brebes folktales is valid, practical, and effective as a learning medium to improve elementary students' cultural and civic literacy.
