Abstract

Water availability assessment is essential for sustainable water resources management, particularly in regions with limited hydrological observations. This study evaluates the Nedbør Afstrømnings Model (NAM) for simulating rainfall–runoff processes and estimating water availability in the Melawi Sub-Watershed, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The study addresses the limited application of NAM as a primary rainfall–runoff model in the study area. The model was developed using rainfall, temperature, evapotranspiration, catchment characteristics, and observed discharge, and then calibrated with daily discharge data. Model performance was evaluated using Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), Root Mean Square Error–Standard Deviation Ratio (RSR), coefficient of determination (R²), Relative Volume Error (RVE), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE). The calibrated NAM model achieved an NSE of 0.578, an RSR of 0.422, an R² of 0.80, an r of 0.89, an RVE of 0.003, and a MAE of 123.414 m³/s. Comparison with MOCK and NRECA showed aggregate performance weights of 59.94%, 56.57%, and 44.00%, respectively. NAM estimated reliable discharges of 1,039.037 m³/s at 80% reliability and 296.485 m³/s at 99% reliability. The results demonstrate NAM’s applicability to water availability assessment and planning under limited hydrological data.
