Abstract

The cultivation of children’s moral character within the family is an important part of personality formation. However, research exploring the strategies of parents who work as teachers amid the demands of professional and parenting roles remains limited. This study aimed to explore the strategies used by parents who work as teachers to cultivate their children’s moral character and the challenges they face. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a phenomenological approach. The informants consisted of four teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Bukittinggi who were also parents and four children as supporting informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings identified five main strategies: role modeling (uswah hasanah), the habitual practice of positive values, communication and persuasive advice, supervision accompanied by evaluation and appreciation, and reinforcement of religious values. Challenges in this process included time constraints, differences in perspectives, the influence of technology and social media, and emotional conflict arising from dual roles. These findings indicate that cultivating moral character in teachers’ families involves integrating family education strategies while facing challenges in fulfilling professional and parenting roles. This study enriches contextual understanding of the cultivation of children’s moral character and underscores the importance of integrating role modeling, habit formation, communication, supervision, and reinforcement of religious values.
