Abstract

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the vermiformis appendix that is one of the most common causes of acute intraabdominal surgical action. This condition can affect all age groups, but it is more common in the adolescent to young adult age group due to a variety of factors, including a low-fiber diet that can trigger appendix lumen obstruction. Typical symptoms of appendicitis generally include lower right abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, and physical signs in the form of pressure pain McBurney. The difference in patient characteristics based on age, gender, clinical symptoms, and physical signs shows the importance of identifying appendicitis patient profiles to support early diagnosis and improve the quality of health services. This study aims to determine the characteristics of appendicitis patients based on age, gender, clinical symptoms, and physical examination at Pertamedika Ummi Rosnati Hospital, Banda Aceh City. This study used a retrospective descriptive method using secondary data from the medical records of patients with a diagnosis of appendicitis at Pertamedika Ummi Rosnati Hospital, Banda Aceh City. The sampling technique used total sampling, 65 appendicitis patients who met the inclusion criteria were obtained. This study was conducted on a sample of 65 cases. Based on age, the highest data was found in the adolescent category, namely 32 people (49.2%) aged 12-25 years. Based on gender, the highest data was found in the female category, which was 33 people (49.2%). Based on clinical symptoms, the most common type of pain was found in the lower right abdominal pain category, which was 63 people (96.9%). Based on physical examinations, the most were found in the McBurney Sign (+) category, which was 54 people (83.1%). Based on the findings of the study, it can be concluded that cases of appendicitis are most commonly found in the adolescent age group, with a higher tendency in the female sex. The most common clinical manifestation is pain in the lower right abdomen, and most patients show positive McBurney Sign test results. These findings are expected to be a source of information and improve the understanding of health workers and the public about the characteristics of appendicitis, so as to support early detection efforts and faster treatment. Abstract

Escherichia coliĀ is one of the pathogenic bacteria that can cause various infections and has the potential to develop resistance to antibiotics. This condition encourages the exploration of natural materials that may serve as alternative antibacterial agents. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) contains various secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, phenolic compounds, terpenoids, and other active compounds, which potentially possess antibacterial activity. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of ginger against the growth of Escherichia coli and to compare its activity with the antibiotic chloramphenicol. This study was an experimental laboratory study using the disk diffusion (Kirby-Bauer) method. Ginger extract was obtained through maceration using 96% ethanol and was tested at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The test bacterium used was Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. Chloramphenicol was used as a positive control, while distilled water was used as a negative control. Each treatment was performed in triplicate, and antibacterial activity was determined based on the diameter of the inhibition zone formed. The results showed that the ethanol extract of ginger was able to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli at all tested concentrations. The mean inhibition zone diameters at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% were 17.15 mm, 20.65 mm, 17.07 mm, and 15.66 mm, respectively. The highest antibacterial activity was observed at a concentration of 50%. Chloramphenicol produced a mean inhibition zone diameter of 37.00 mm, whereas the negative control produced a diameter of 6.00 mm. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that ginger ethanol extract has antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, although its activity remains lower than that of chloramphenicol.
