Abstract

Student involvement in social activities in the Biology Education Study Program at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang remains low. Data from the Study Program Student Association (HMPS) in 2026 recorded that only 30 of 425 students, or 7.06 percent, were involved. This community service aims to strengthen students’ character and social awareness through Ramadan Berbagi together with the Biology Education HMPS of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang. The activity was held on 2 March 2026 at Al-Ghazali Orphanage with 30 students, the head and the secretary of the Biology Education Study Program, and lecturers, through preparation, implementation, and evaluation stages. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and interviews, then analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis. The results show that food packages and cash were distributed to the orphanage children, and students were directly involved from preparation to educational games. According to the interviews, students gained a better understanding of the conditions around them, practiced responsibility and cooperation, and viewed the activity as preparation for their future students. The challenges were the children’s initial passivity and shyness, and games that were not yet related to biology. The activity needs to be carried out continuously with more objective measurement of character.

Abstract

Biology learning holds strategic potential for linking the mastery of scientific concepts with the strengthening of faith and piety (imtaq) while fostering moderate religious attitudes. This study aims to describe the integration of imtaq values in Biology learning and its contribution to strengthening religious moderation at SMA Negeri 5 Palembang. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed. Data were collected through a nine-indicator classroom observation checklist and open-ended reflective notes completed by 30 grade X students, and were analysed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing combined with thematic analysis. The results show that imtaq integration was observed throughout all learning stages, from the opening with greetings, prayer, and expressions of gratitude, to core activities that relate biological phenomena to the greatness of God, and closing activities that address both knowledge and faith, with an implementation rate of 98.9% based on students’ perceptions. The indicators with relatively lower implementation were linking the material to Qur’anic verses/Hadith (93.3%) and inviting critical thinking and openness toward diverse opinions (96.7%). Thematic analysis of the reflective notes yielded five themes: affective relationships and respect toward the teacher, a positive learning atmosphere, ease of understanding the material, learning motivation, and gratitude for knowledge. These findings indicate that imtaq-based Biology learning can serve as a means of strengthening religious moderation values, particularly balance (tawassuth) between science and faith, tolerance (tasamuh) toward differing opinions, and civility in educational relationships.

Abstract

Character education based on Islamic values serves as a strategic approach to integrating mastery of the natural sciences with the cultivation of noble character. Schools that adopt an *imtaq* (faith and piety) perspective are characterized by the establishment of a vertical relationship connecting the human to the Divine that defines their educational philosophy. This initiative aimed to encourage teachers to design biology lessons infused with Islamic character, while fostering environmental awareness and social responsibility among students based on Islamic values. The implementation process involved coordination with the school, presentations by resource persons, discussions and surveys with vocational high school (SMK) students, simulations of Islamic-character-based instruction, and an evaluation of the activity via comprehension surveys. Survey results indicated an increase in both teachers' and students' understanding of the importance of integrating Islamic character values into health-focused biology lessons, with participants achieving an average comprehension score of 88.96, classified as "Very Good." The activity successfully enhanced understanding regarding the integration of Islamic character values in biology education, facilitated simulations of Islamic-character-based instruction, and established collaborative networks. It is hoped that this initiative will serve as a model for the sustainable strengthening of religious character.
