Abstract

This study aims to investigate how students’ interest in learning correlates with their ability to solve mathematical problems, particularly on the topic of the Pythagorean Theorem. The research employed a quantitative correlational design and involved 31 eighth-grade students selected through random sampling. The instruments consisted of a learning-interest questionnaire and a descriptive test assessing problem-solving skills. The analysis showed that the dataset satisfied the normality assumption and revealed a linear association between the two variables. Using Pearson’s correlation, the study obtained a coefficient of 0.988 with a significance level below 0.001, indicating a strong and meaningful relationship between learning interest and mathematical problem-solving skills. Furthermore, the determination coefficient of 0.976 suggests that learning interest contributes 97.6% to students’ problem-solving performance. These findings imply that students who possess higher learning interest tend to achieve better outcomes in solving mathematical problems related to the Pythagorean Theorem.
