Abstract

The availability of PAMSIMAS facilities does not automatically suppress water-based diseases without the adoption of adequate health behaviors. Analyzing the relationship between health education and the three pillars of health behavior (environmental cleanliness, drinking water treatment, and solid waste management) among PAMSIMAS users in Sidoarjo Regency. This cross-sectional study involved 120 heads of families using PAMSIMAS from six villages selected by stratified random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and observations, then analyzed using Spearman's Rho correlation test (α=0.05). The majority of respondents have never participated in non-formal health education (78.3%). Health education was significantly positively related to environmental cleanliness (Rs=0.2810; p=0.002) and drinking water treatment (Rs=0.2285; p=0.012). On the other hand, no significant relationship was found with solid waste management (Rs=−0.08458; p=0.358), where 74.2% of respondents still burn waste independently. Non-formal health education is weakly to moderately correlated with environmental cleanliness and water treatment, whose behavior is more driven by internal factors of formal education. Failure of waste management is caused by the absence of physical supporting facilities (enabling factors). Health interventions require the provision of sanitation infrastructure in addition to education.
