Abstract

Corrosion is a major problem in ASTM A53 carbon steel, which is widely used in piping systems, making environmentally friendly corrosion control methods essential. This study aimed to analyze the effect of varying concentrations of waste tea (Camellia sinensis) extract as a green corrosion inhibitor on the corrosion rate of ASTM A53 carbon steel. An experimental method was employed using inhibitor concentrations of 0, 200, 400, and 600 mg/L in rainwater as the corrosive medium for an immersion period of five days. Corrosion testing was conducted using the potentiodynamic polarization method based on ASTM G102 to determine the corrosion rate. The results showed that the addition of waste tea extract significantly improved the corrosion resistance of carbon steel. The optimum performance was achieved at an inhibitor concentration of 600 mg/L, resulting in the lowest corrosion rate of 0.19149 mmpy and an inhibition efficiency of 77.31%, while the specimen without inhibitor exhibited the highest corrosion rate of 0.84407 mmpy. The formation of a more homogeneous adsorption layer effectively reduced the corrosion products on the steel surface. Therefore, waste tea extract has strong potential as an effective, economical, and environmentally friendly green corrosion inhibitor for protecting carbon steel piping systems.
