Abstract

This study aims to analyze WWF Indonesia’s environmental communication strategy for climate change mitigation within the Plastic Smart Cities program descriptively and critically. Plastic Smart Cities is a World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) program that aims to stop plastic leakage into nature while mitigating the impacts of climate change by involving multiactors from various sectors. The research used is qualitative descriptive with a case study approach, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. This study integrates Cox’s environmental communication strategy framework with the sustainability communication typology of Newig et al. The results show that although the practice of WWF Indonesia's environmental communication strategy structurally complies with Cox's environmental communication strategy framework, which consists of four main stages (assessment, planning, production, action and reflection), its communication practice is dominated by the transmissive pattern of communication of sustainability (CoS) while deliberative communication about sustainability (CaS) is only limited to the operational realm. In its communication practice, the climate crisis is only placed as a background narrative, not the main frame shaping the message.
